You Can’t Make This Stuff Up!
John McCain’s selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate is going to get a LOT more interesting, and scrutiny, before this is over - count on it. First…
There is an assertion that she was once a member of an organization advocating the secession of Alaska from the U.S.
There is the assertion that she advocates the teaching of creationism in the public school system.
There is also an assertion that she supports the criminalization of abortion in all cases except imminent danger to the life of the mother. No exceptions for rape or incest.
There is an assertion that McCain’s campaign staff did not perform even a rudimentary search of the archives of Palin’s hometown paper of record during the vetting process.
Lastly, there is video of Palin firing an automatic weapon during some sort of target practice/campaign exercise.
This is not to mention:
- a statement from palin herself this morning that her 17 yr old unmarried daughter is pregnant,
- she is being investigated for firing the Alaska Public Safety Commissioner for refusing to fire a state trooper who happened to be the ex-spouse of her sister embroiled in a bitter divorce dispute, and
- that she supported the “Bridge to Nowhere” before she opposed it.
You can’t make this stuff up…

Let’s start with Creationism in schools and the criminalization of abortion; both will earn votes with their costituents. We can follow by noting that she’s kind of hot (in that Van Halen, “Teacher"- librarian sort of way and will look great in the photo opps. And we can finish with secession which may win her half of Texas. I am certain that John Mcain had nothing to do with choosing Palin. The choice belonged to his strategists. I’m sure he went kicking and screaming into that one. She is pitifully unqualified as a VP. But David Gergen is right, “this race is far from over.”. We will have to fight for it. on 09/02 at 03:06 PM

Forgot to mention . . . . the “automatic weapon target practice” has to be the absolute whipped cream and cherry on top for those boys. They’ll probably stay up late watching it on TIVO while their wives are asleep. on 09/02 at 04:37 PM

There has to be a trade off for her family for this venture. Especially with a child with Down’s. That child will need his Mom more than any of the other children. To put that child first, seems to be one of her down the list priorities. There go those Family Values in action again. on 09/02 at 09:11 PM

I think all the voters he gains with her pick he had anyway. He surely can’t count on many Hillary voters crossing over once her record becomes more widely known. Have you two seen the picture of her circulating the internet of her in a bikini brandishing an automatic weapon? I am presently trying to verify its authenticity… on 09/02 at 09:23 PM

It is kind of hard to believe that any Clinton supporter would cross to that side just to elect a woman. Though I have often thought that the first woman, minority, whatever elected to vp or president would need to be a republican. As for qualified? To hear the republicans at the convention talk, she should be the presidential candidate. Way more executive experience than John McCain (or Barack Obama). on 09/02 at 11:31 PM

Odd isn’t it? Seems all these folks in MN want to talk about is the abortion issue now? It only seems to come up around election time. Hmm? Rewind to 2000-06: the GOP had total control of this govt. Exec, Legislative & virtual Judicial branches. So in control were they that through the absolute arrogance, they didn’t even bother to notify Dems when committee meetings were being held & steamrolled their agendas through congress onto the Prez’s desk. They had the numbers to do whatever they wanted & they exercised that authority to the point of abuse. Let’s see? Bankers got theirs. Drug companies, Big Oil, tax breaks for their buds, no-bid contracts let for billions, etc....typical Silk Stocking GOP in action. But wait! Where was the Ban on Abortion Bill?? Though they had the numbers to do what the social conservatives claim to want the most, never even showed its face. If it were on that high moral plateau that this bunch claims it is, they would have shoved that through somewhere in the legislative feeding frenzy. Yet they did nothing!! NADA! ZILCH!! NOTHING AT ALL FOR THE ABORTION ISSUE THAT THEY SOOOO HANG THEIR HATS ON TODAY. But then if they really did come to conclusion of the abortion issue to their liking, then they would have no carrot to dangle in front of these so-called “Christian Evangelicals”. (For the record, I am a Christian too.). this issue has allowed them to politicize what they claim to be sacred. More Bizarro Republican politics. But they work. One also wonders what if? What if it was Chelsea Clinton that became prego at 17? Would we be hearing all the kind words of empathy, tollerance & understanding from the so-called “Christian Evangelicals”? there are some strange happenings in the Party Of Lincoln these days. on 09/03 at 08:21 AM

OK. If these rumblings about Palin being a strategic foil before “the real Veep” is presented are true, then Mike Huckabee will be the VP. It’s brilliant. Palin is “the New Coke;” Huckabee is “Coca-Cola Classic.” It will build lots of drama and conclude with the ultimate right-wing payoff, Huck! They will be re-energized and gain tremendous momentum. Which means we need to get to work . . . . . . just like David Gergen said, of course. on 09/03 at 10:39 AM

Mike, for some sense of what would have happened if Chelsea had been a teenage mother check out Oreilly’s comments regarding the Spears daughter. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/04/jon-stewart-hits-karl-rov_n_123852.html on 09/04 at 11:46 PM
